It’s nearly a couple of weeks since my last post – mainly because I haven’t been around to post one.
Last week was a high-stress week, cramming the training in and getting ready for New York – just a few days away from the norm. A TSS of 630+ for the 7 days sent my fatigue into the 100’s but the fitness has increased so that’s a good sign….I think!
Swim sessions are getting around 1000 metres which is unheard of. Total for the week was 2160m in around 55 minutes. I’m still struggling with being comfortable in the water, my dizziness hasn’t subsided but last week’s CT scan a my local hospital has come up with Chronic Sinusitis which I think can be resolved with medication or a lot of visits to the steam room. Time will tell.
Bike sessions are getting better, or ever so slightly more comfortable, that illustrious 300w mark seems to be attainable in my sessions whereas a few weeks ago 270w was difficult. Just under 100 miles in 3 sessions has kept me where I need to be. My promises to get out onto the road with my team-mates has yet to materialise as the weather has been bad and I’m not keen on ice skating on 23mm tyres and breaking a collarbone. No doubt my team-mates will rib me about being a lightweight – I’ve already had the “you write your own future” speech off one.
Run sessions are also good, albeit at a smaller distance currently but I’m using this opportunity to develop my pace and my 2nd fastest 5km Park Run was recorded at the end of this tough week. Had to end it with a bacon & egg baguette though.

Time for a break…..
NYC – 5 days and 4 nights of walking over 30-miles around Manhattan Island. Upper East Side, Downtown and all the sights. The last day it was decided the Subway was a better option as our legs were very tired. Temperatures were around zero degrees but the wind-chill got it down to around -7 on most days. I think we were operating still in UK time so days were this was 13:00- 04:00 GMT – so jet lag is on-going now we’re back.
Did I mention that I’m scared of flying & heights?
So… the extended 8-hour flight outbound, the “seat-belts on” majority of the 6-hour way back because of turbulence was proper testing my resolve.
Added to this Suzy was keen to show me the sights of New York, most of which were beyond the 60th floor!
Oh…added to this I proposed to her at the top of The Empire States Building on her birthday.
So it’s safe to say I need to rest for a few days!!!
Back to reality…..
As soon as we were back we were straight to bed as UK time was midnight. From this we both were up for work the next day. I started my new job so that was going to be nerve-wracking…which in the end was quite a relaxed affair.
As soon as work finished training was back with a vengeance. That evening we were both straight into the gym with double bike/swim sessions to complete. The week is not over and I’m already at 400TSS. Only one swim, 3 bike rides and 2 runs with an endurance bike session tomorrow in this lovely British weather.
The legs aren’t really playing at the moment, neither are the lungs to be fair. A steady run today and I was breathing heavy and quite loud. Looking back at the heart rate I was apparently just cruising. Lower back hurts a bit so I know my body is paying the price to either New York or the accumulative stress training has created recently – I’m hoping it’s short lived. A few foam roller sessions and a massage will soon put pay to that.
Onto the next week – more boxes to tick, more sessions to complete….
